Water Resource Management in Buildings: at MCE a focus on the Intelligent (use of) Water

At MCE – Mostra Convegno Expocomfort 2026, four exhibition halls spanning over 30,000 square metres will showcase the “intelligent” management of water resources. The event presents a variety of initiatives, events, and laboratories, and involves exhibiting companies specialising in water treatment, sanitary technology, pumps, and valves.

”Launched in collaboration with ANGAISA, AQUA ITALIA, ASSOPOMPE and AVR, the ‘Intelligent (use of) Water’ initiative – says Massimiliano Pierini, Managing Director of RX Italy – seeks to promote expertise and practical experience, encouraging greater responsibility and awareness in water resource management.”.

The initiative highlights water as a strategic resource and promotes innovative solutions to manage, conserve, and improve water quality in residential, industrial, and urban settings.

For instance, one concrete application of these strategies is the opportunity to develop buildings with a positive water footprint, both residential and industrial.

In Italy, water recovery technology is already highly advanced and ready, enabling the management of diverse sources such as rainwater harvesting and the reuse of greywater (and potentially blackwater). To illustrate the impact of these technologies, according to data provided by AQUA Italia for MCE Lab, even considering only the residential sector, the daily per capita water demand is usually around 200 litres per day (25–30% blackwater ≈, 50 litres/day per person, 70–75% greywater ≈, 150 litres/day per person). Meteoric water (rain and snow) can also be considered. However, recovering it alone cannot meet demand or maximise the reuse of available volumes.

This goal could be achieved through the recovery of greywater. However, a significant challenge remains: regulatory barriers, as water reuse is currently limited to secondary (‘dual’) purposes and not for potable uses.”

These are real opportunities that highlight the importance of water as a resource and the need to minimise waste,” continues Pierini. “The goal of the ‘Intelligent (use of) Water’ initiative is precisely to bring to the forefront, for visitors to MCE 2026, technologies and solutions aimed at water efficiency. These form part of the Water Ambassadors initiatives, targeted at visiting industry professionals.”

In support of these aims, the Water Ambassadors will guide visitors towards the intelligent use of water through innovative technologies and solutions focused on water efficiency, supported by workshops and initiatives within Halls 2/4 and 6/10.

Among them, at the 44th edition of MCE, are: ACCA, ACQUA BREVETTI, ATLAS FILTRI, CALEFFI, DAB PUMPS, DVGW CERT, EBARA PUMPS EUROPE, Ebitt FLUID TECHNOLOGIES, ELBI, ENKI WATER, EUROTIS, FISC ITALIANA, FRANKLIN ELECTRIC, FROG PUMP, GEBERIT, GLONG ITALY, HAPPY PUMP, ICC EVALUATION SERVICE, ITS TODINI, JIADI PUMP, MAC3 , NEOPERL ITALIA, PSP, PUCCIPLAST, RUBINETTERIE BRESCIANE BONOMI, SACEMI GAMAR, SEA-LAND, SFA ITALIA, TAIFU PUMP, TELCOM, VIR VALVOINDUSTRIA ING. RIZZIO, WALRUS PUMP.

Water resources will also be at the heart of the meetings organised by Just a Drop, the charity supported by MCE to bring safe drinking water to some of the world’s most disadvantaged communities, scheduled to take place in the Conference & Business Area of 2:

·        Water, Partnerships, and Impact: Driving ESG Success, on Tuesday, 24 March 2026, at 3:00 PM

·        The Development of Just a Drop: The Value of Water, Cross-Sector Partnership, and Sustainable Impact, on Wednesday, 25 March 2026, at 3:00 PM

·        From Access to Impact: Water’s Transformative Potential, on Thursday, 26 March 2026, at 3:00 PM.

Also involved in providing data and insights, Just a Drop will further promote the international initiative Tap Water for All!, aimed at the hospitality sector, to help fund projects that provide disadvantaged communities around the world with access to safe drinking water.

“In a world increasingly marked by water scarcity, water represents not only an essential resource for life but also the cornerstone of a responsible energy transition.”  Pierini concludes. “In our sectors, optimising water use through efficient management, recovery and recycling systems is therefore crucial to reducing waste and ensuring future prosperity”.
